Happy International Women’s Day!
Last year, Girl Scouts of the USA & CARE launched 'The Power of Girls' initiative to help mobilize girls around important global issues, including the critical role that girls' education and leadership play in addressing poverty. The initiative puts girls at the heart of a conversation about the most important issues of our time.
In Tribute to a Great Public Servant
This week, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania, joined with military leaders, business professionals, community groups, legislators, and neighbors of Representative John P. Murtha to honor his life and mourn his passing. Mr. Murtha served as a great supporter of Girl Scouting, beginning with when his wife Joyce, served as a troop leader for her daughter, Donna. Throughout the years, they provided breast cancer awareness programs to girls and always found the time to invite their friends and contacts to support our organization. The Congressman always showed a special interest in our girls and in their achievements.
Does Your Daughter Know She’s Beautiful?
It’s alarming how many results pop up on a Google search for “media influence on girls body image”. How tween and teen girls feel about their bodies is influenced by numerous factors, from friends and family to media online and offline to even their religious beliefs. Even though most girls are not negatively affected by these factors, on a typical day they do consider their looks (clothes, hair, body) from sometimes, to all the time. One piece of advice that girls believe could positively affect other girls is for them to accept and be proud of themselves.

Coming Attractions for 2010!
I’ve just taken a sneak preview of S’MORE Magazine’s spring-summer issue; and it’s definitely filled with all the good things in Girl Scouting.
Giving from the Heart
I know a former Girl Scout who wouldn't have had the opportunity to explore her own potential if it hadn't been through a Girl Scout in-school program. While others may have given up on her, Girl Scouting taught her the importance of believing in herself, knowing that she could make a difference in the world.

The survey results are in and you have spoken! The program study is nearing completion and preliminary recommendations are being finalized by the marketing, program, and property research task groups.
