Tributes

With nearly 100 years of rich history, Girl Scouting has been made possible by a phenomenal list of volunteers, staff, donors, and of course, girls.

We honor the recently passed members of our Girl Scout family listed below, who truly made a difference to our organization.

Elizabeth “Betty” Kenney Winters, age 95, died of heart failure on March 24, 2010. Born in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Winters was a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School and Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. She was employed as a bacteriologist at Magee Hospital. Betty served as President of the Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania 1965 to 1969. She was a long-time member of the Mt. Lebanon United Presbyterian Church, the Mt. Lebanon Women's Club, the South Hills College Club, and the Colonel William Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Since the death of her husband, Richard R. Winters, she was an associate member of the Duquesne Club. An avid outdoorswoman who advocated camping opportunities for girls and young women, Mrs. Winters helped develop Girl Scout Camp Timberlake in Washington County, and as Girl Scout council president she led efforts that resulted in the acquisition and development of Camp Henry Kaufmann near Bolivar, PA. In later years she gained notoriety as a creator of hand-tied fishing flies. Betty is survived by a son, George R. Winters, a daughter, Betsy Winters, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The family will hold a Memorial Service in the Hickman Chapel of Asbury Heights, 700 Bower Hill Road, Pittsburgh PA 15243 at 1:30 PM on Friday May 28th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory to the Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania, 30 Isabella Street, Pittsburgh PA 15212.

Daniel E. Newcomer, 65, of Waterford, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010. Dan was employed by Girl Scouts as the Property Manager at Camp Hawthorne Ridge from 1982 until his retirement in 2008. He was dedicated to providing a safe and happy environment for the girls. He was beloved by the girls he served. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and visiting his grandchildren. Dan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam Era. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society - Erie Unit or Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania to support camperships for girls attending Hawthorn Ridge.
